1. Return on investment
If I said "hey, do you want an extra $15,000+ in your pocket over the next 25 years", what would you say? I'm hoping you say yes, but let's face it, it comes with a catch. You have to install a solar PV system! These systems aren't just fun ways to spend money and show how progressive you are, they are actual long term investments that can help you financially as a homeowner. Did you know that homes with solar PV systems on them sell twice as fast as homes without them? Did you know that a solar PV system adds around $4 per watt onto your homes selling price? Even if it isn't brand new! Free energy is free energy, and people get excited at the idea of less bills and more usage. The average homeowner in Texas is in a position to see their ROI before 10 years, some as early as 6! It really depends on your energy usage, home size, and lifestyle.
2. Energy Independence
The idea of energy independence doesn't just mean you have free energy, this is the idea that you are no longer reliant on the public energy grid, which we all learned this winter is incredibly weak and prone to failure. There are few things that the government is in charge of that they do well, and I'd like to shorten that list when it concerns me however I can. With the recent Colonial pipeline hacking/ransom we can see that this wave of cyber terrorism is extremely dangerous to our economy and our nation's infrastructure. A solar PV system with a battery back up gives you complete security during both of these types of events. The final piece of energy independence is combatting inflation. The average energy company raises costs by 4% per year, which means twenty years from now you will be paying a lot more for electricity than you do now. Going solar locks in your costs for 30+ years and allows you to avoid inflation.
3. Sustainability
The obvious answer for reasons to go solar is that it is sustainable and helps eliminates your carbon footprint. Solar is truly clean, especially when you have a battery system and you can rarely pull from the grid itself. An electric vehicle can really complete the trifecta. Buildings in the United States make up for 38% of our total carbon footprint. When installing a solar PV system , you do the equivalent of planting 100 trees every year and actually help reduce water waste in your community. The technology used currently allows these panels to last for over 40 years which means less landfill waste and more recycling opportunities. Solar is the right thing to do, for you, and everyone else too.
